Morocco's holy grail. Just it's name says enough, African Crimson-winged Finch. These birds live high in the Atlas, up to the snow edge. In the winter they come down the mountains and can be found near settlements. The place to go in Morocco is the ski-resort Oukaimeden.
Most birders visit this area in March when there's still snow and the birds hang around the parkings. Now in May the snow has melted and all is green. I was a bit afraid to miss out on this target bird but it showed that early in the morning some birds still come down to drink from the small streams.
De soort van de Atlas of misschien Marokko zelf is de Atlasbergvink. Deze vogels houden zich op bij de sneeuwgrens en kunnen in de winterperiode rondom nederzettingen in de bergen worden waargenomen.
De plek in Marokko is het ski-resort in Oukaimeden. De meeste vogelaars bezoeken het gebied in maart als er nog sneeuw ligt en de vogels makkelijk te zien zijn op de parkeerplaatsen. In mei was alle sneeuw gesmolten en ik vreesde de vogels te missen. Gelukkig kwamen er een aantal vroeg in de ochtend de berg af om te drinken in de stroompjes van smeltwater.
