On the first full day in Morocco I visited the "Cyber Park" in Marrakech early in the morning. I almost tripped over several Turtle Doves foraging on the ground.
Whilst in the Netherlands, and other European countries, this species is in rapid decline and almost extinct as a breeding bird, here the birds were happily foraging on the gravel tracks, singing from lantern posts and doing their display flights not worrying about their northern relatives.
Will the Turtle Dove is becoming the European equivalent of the Passenger Dove?
Op de eerste volle dag in Marokko bezocht ik het zogenaamde " Cyber Park" in Marokko. Tot mijn verbazing struikelde ik bijna over Zomertortels. Nietsvermoedend scharrelde ze over de grindpaden, koerde ze vanaf de lantaarnpalen of sloofde ze zich uit met een baltsvlucht. In Nederland en de andere Europese gaat het minder gemoedelijk en is de situatie dieptriest. De Zomertortel als broedvogel al bijna uitgestorven, habitat verlies, gif verzadigde akkers, en stikstof overladen natuurgebieden en de jacht in zuid Europa maken van de Zomertortel de Europese Trekduif.
